Title: GEOMETRY AND THE COMPACT PHASE OF CHAIN MOLECULES

Abstract: In this talk, I will review studies on how the compact phase of a polymer depends on the geometry and the local symmetry of the chain. These studies are based on simple models which correspond to a flexible tube, a chain of overlapping spheres, a chain with attached side spheres, and a flexible ribbon of non-zero thickness. Interesting results obtained from these polymer models include the emergence of a novel phase comprised by protein-like structures [1] and the formation of a twisted ribbon akin to the DNA double helix [2]. The studies help to delineate the differences between conventional polymer and functional biomolecules and have implications for the design of artificial molecular nanomachines.
